Amp1 Upgrade!
RW Audio Amp1 was designed with one specific goal in mind, creating the best headphone amplifier for its price range and application.
Careful attention was placed on all areas of the design, including sound quality, reliability, appearance, stability and upgradeability.
Amp1 was designed around the National Semiconductor LME49860 dual op-amp, careful parts selection, layout and extensive testing went into getting the
most out of every part. There are no high dollar capacitors, resistors or op-amps used in Amp1 because most of those parts don't add any
appreciable addition to the results, they only drive up the product cost. In short they simply took value away from the complete design. But... (There
is always a "but") one of those high dollar op-amps really does work amazingly well with the Amp1 design. There is a simple reason for this, the
LME49720HA is basically the metal can version of the LME49860, on paper they are identical in almost every way. I usually stay away from these parts
because they bring little value to the completed product. While I won't be changing the stock op-amp from the LME49860 to the LME49720HA due to the
cost, and where it would put the new price point of Amp1. I will make it available to everyone looking for an incredibly worthwhile upgrade.
This upgrade comes in three forms, either loose op-amps including adapters that the customer will install into their Amp1.
A direct upgrade at the time of purchase, the upgraded op-amps will be installed before your product ships.
Or for those with the ability, sourcing and installing the op-amps yourself. Please note that the TO-99 metal package is not directly compatible with
the dip sockets used in Amp1. An adapter like the one offered from Cimarron Technology (p/n 020601B) is required. Experienced diyer's may also choose to bend the TO-99 pins directly into the DIP8 form factor as shown to
the right.
This upgrade includes two LME49720HA mounted in dip sockets for direct placement into Amp1.
